Here Come the 1-2-3s

Colin's access to the television is pretty limited, but I admit I wish he watched a lot less (or none). He can watch an occasional episode of Spongebob and gets to watch some kid's films (Bug's Life is the current fave) but I also insist on educational videos as well.

There's a great series called Preschool Prep which teaches letters, numbers, colors and shapes which we watch from time to time, but lately he's been really enjoying Here Come the 1-2-3s by They Might Be Giants.  And, as H so sagely put it a few months back... unlike most of the genre these guys are actually decent musicians who happen to put out child-friendly albums.

What I really love is how Colin is starting to sing along.  His crazy mother loves to sing and pretty much knows all the words to every song, his dad knows all the tunes but makes up his own lyrics, and now Colin is starting to chime in as well.  Here Come the 1-2-3s came as a CD/DVD combo set, so we listen in the car as well.  When the song Zeros comes on Colin joins in with a lovely "zeee-oooooooos!"  For the Triops song he chimes in for the chorus "three eeeeeeeyes!" and he loves shouting "ooh-la ooh-la" during Double Dutch.  But my favorite was yesterday morning when he was trying his best to say/sing Nonagon.  The kid is not yet 2 years old, and I know he doesn't understand what it means, but he's learning geometry terms!  How cool is that?!?  The bonus: it isn't just numbers!  We have two other CD/DVD sets by TMBG (Here Come the ABCs, Here Comes Science) so there's plenty of variety.

And while I realize Colin shouldn't be watching a lot of TV - it could be a whole lot worse.  He could be addicted to Barney, or Elmo, or a whole host of other brain candy that would make his mother want to stab herself in the eye with a fork just to lessen the pain.  Hooray for TMBG!
