The Magic Hat

Waaay back in early April at the baby shower Grandma Lulu made a beautiful gift.  She knit a sweater set (sweater and matching hat) for Colin.  Now, granted, at the time winter seemed a long, loooong way off.  And who knew if Colin would be a hulking giant or a teeny little guy?  Especially once the cold weather rolled around!  But they were beautiful, and it was such a kind gesture that I thanked her and tucked them carefully away.  Thinking quietly to myself that they probably would never be worn and wouldn't that be a shame.

Over the past couple of months, as usually happens around this time of year, the weather has been getting colder.  So I pulled out the sweater set.  Not knowing how well (or if) it would fit, but I thought I should at least check.  I shoud have known better than to doubt a grandma's innate abilities.

Not only is the set a perfect fit, it has magical properties.  I don't know how, or why, and frankly I don't care.  You don't question something like the (oooh! aaaah!) magic hat. This is no joke.  It is a beatiful, warm, and easy to get on/off sweater and hat.  That alone make it priceless, especially for the mother of a very wiggly little boy who loves to arch his back and flip over, and who hates to be cold.  But somehow, no matter how frustrated, sad, or irritated Colin is... when that hat goes on he cannot help but fall asleep.  He doesn't even care if it gets pulled all the way down to his nose... the magic hat can do no wrong!

As a side note, Colin has also developed a bizarre habit of chewing on his sleeves.  Doesn't matter if it is pajamas, a t-shirt, a sweater, or a jacket... and it isn't accidental.  He just likes to have cloth in his mouth.  If he doesn't have a sleeve available he'll grab a nearby blanket, quilt, burp cloth... or snag any article of clothing you might be wearing that is within reach so he can jam it into his mouth!  The magic hat's partner "super sweater" fulfills that need, and has a gently gnawed left arm as evidence of Colin's sleeve-chewing proclivity.

So to all the grandmothers out there, knitting hats and sprinkling them with magical fairy dust, on behalf of all the mamas in the world please accept our sincere thanks and deepest grattitude.  Your efforts keep our little ones happy and warm, and give us moms a small chance for a moment of peace.  Huzzah!
