Num Num Num

Over Labor Day weekend we traveled to Cleveland to visit family - Colin's second road trip. He was an angel on the way out, and thankfully this time our trip wasn't as harrowing as our last journey. (First trip was a disaster. We left at about 5PM instead of at noon as planned. Colin was starving so we stopped. After he ate we got back on the road, and entered torrential pouring rain that was so hard you couldn't see 20 yards in front of the car. Later Colin had another meltdown so we had to stop again. This time dad got back behind the wheel. I went to take a short nap, and awoke 30 minutes later to the densest fog imaginable. We only stayed on the road by watching the taillights of the semi in front of us! And we got into Cleveland at about 3:30 AM. UGH) This time we still left later than planned, but we were making good time and this time had brought a couple of bottles for Colin so he was able to eat while we were driving. This saved a lot of angst (for Colin) and kept us chugging along.

The trip was wonderful, and Colin was again the center of attention. At one point he was having some "tummy time" in the living room and I swear there were at least 8 kids crowded around him all trying to play with him and make sure he was happy and entertained. No sultan was ever more adored or spoiled!

Aside from the intense adulation there were a couple of milestones (of sorts) for Colin while we were in C-town. First, he tasted his first food. I had eaten a nice, fresh, tart Granny Smith apple, and had the core in my hand. I was in the midst of an interesting conversation so was waiting to discard the core. Colin was in my lap and was looking for something to play with so I thought I'd let him lick the apple. (His favorite trick now is to grab anything and everything he can get his hands on and jam it straight into his mouth.) The look on his face was a combination of shock, curiosity, and epicurean delight. After one teeny taste he was enthralled and his little tongue was going a mile a minute... in-out-in-out-lick-lick-lick-licky-licky-lick!!! Occasionally he would lunge forward and gnaw on it a bit - he's still in the early stages of teething, so he couldn't really get any purchase, but he sure had fun trying. I think it kept him enthralled for about 15 minutes! Now I can't wait to start him on solids, and see how he reacts to all the new flavors! Only about a month and a half, and then... taste buds, here we come!!

The other exciting event happened late on Sunday night. After another active day all the adults were sitting down, and Colin had begun to doze in my lap. I didn't want to put him into the Pack-n-Play in the basement since we didn't have a monitor, but thought I should be able to lay him down in the living room. All the kids had gone to bed, Snoopy (the host dog - an extremely enthusiastic Wheaten Terrier who just celebrated his first birthday) was snoozing in his crate, and things were quiet. So I put his blanket on the living room floor, and took the napping baby and laid him belly-down. He stuck his butt up into the air, snuggled a bit, then looked like he was settling in for a nice deep sleep. I went back into the other room, and sat where I could watch him, just to make sure he was OK... and proceeded to watch him scootch, sideways, about 6 feet until he was nearly off the blanket! I thought this kid wasn't mobile yet!!! Wrong, mom, dead wrong. This kid was in motion, and leaving him to his own devices on the floor apparently was not an option.

Not that I minded... I picked him up and he snuggled into my shoulder and settled down immediately into a deep contented sleep.

Since then he now rolls over constantly from his back to front... left and right, with a quickness that is frankly fun to watch. He is also rolling from his belly to his back although not as often. He seems to prefer playing on his belly followed by vociferous complaints and eventual crying. Yet he insists on rolling over onto his belly. Go figure.

He also now enjoys rolling over during every diaper change. I've become used to his arching back the moment his old diaper comes off, but apparently this is creating a challenge for his teachers at school. He won't hold still, and thinks it is great fun to roll over during his diaper changes, so they have to struggle with Mr. Wiggles.

And on a final, very happy note, I'd like to say congratulations to our friends Mahesh and Sheenu on the birth of their son, Baby Boy Chandwani (name not selected yet) who arrived at 9:23 PM on 09/09/09... if that's not a proprietous birthday I don't know what is!!
