I did it!

Earlier this week I was talking to Colin's teacher Ms. Adrianne, and we were laughing about how parents often underestimate what a child can do.  This conversation started because a new child in the class was sitting at the table with his bottle in one hand, and a sippy cup in the other.  He was alternately drinking from each... but his mother was convinced that he cannot hold a cup/bottle himself.  (The boy is at least 2 years old.)

I said that is why I go out of my way to try and make Colin do things for himself... I want him to be self-sufficient.  Ms. Adrianne laughed and said that there's very little Colin can't do.  Just that morning he finished his fruit, then closed the tupperware container himself.  She complimented Colin on this and excitedly said "You did it!"  Colin looked back at her with a giant grin and, clear as day said, "I did it!"

We tried to get him to say it again (with me present) and sure enough... he did something and then said "I did it!" after which we all clapped and cheered.  So he said it again, and again, and again with the biggest grin on his face.

That night at home I told H about it... so Colin did something in the kitchen (I can't recall what) and exclaimed "I did it!"  H was so excited he raised his hands over his head and parroted back to Colin "I did it!!"   Colin liked that a lot, so he did it too... so I had both of my boys together, chanting "I did it!" with their hands raised over their heads in a glorious victory celebration.

Now he says it all the time.
Done eating breakfast?  "I did it!"
Turned on the alphabet toy?  "I did it!"
Threw the ball?  "I did it!"
Brushed your hair?  "I did it!"

How's that for a glorious first sentence?!?!
