How to Cry
How to cry. This isn't something that varies too much among humans. There's a few standards that pretty much everyone adheres to, from birth on through to adulthood. And while every cry is a little different, and a parent can almost always distinguish their child's cry from any other child.... in this respect I think Ryan pretty much takes the cake.
Some kids might waaaah, or sob, or wail, or boo-hoo. Maybe they quietly sniff-sniff, or silently sit with tears rolling down their face. Or any combination thereof.
Not Ryan.
The other night he was having a bad time. A minor summer cold turned into an all-out issue and he was on an every-4-hours nebulizer schedule. The couple of times he managed to fall asleep that night were short-lived as he was stuffy, short of breath, and generally miserable. And, in classic Ryan fashion, he was crying. It sounded like this:
MommySharma-MommySharma-MommySharma-MommySharma-
Mommy Sharma-MommySharma-MommySharma-MommySharma-
Mommy Sharma-MommySharma-MommySharma-MommySharma-
Mommy Sharma-MommySharma-MommySharma-MommySharma-
Mommy Sharma-MommySharma-MommySharma-MommySharma-
Mommy Sharma-MommySharma-MommySharma-MommySharma!!!
I held him. I patted his back. I said his name, telling him that it was me, Mommy Sharma, right here holding him. I kissed him. I rocked him. I gave him to Hari. I took him back. I tried tickling him. I cuddled him. I even brought Sydney over as a doggy-distraction. I might as well have sat down across the room and drank a beer for all the good it did.
This went on for a good half hour. Maybe longer. It certainly felt longer. It is entirely possible that he was crying for at least 6 months... although the calendar states otherwise. But no matter what I did he was just utterly miserable, crying for the mommy who was holding him!!!
Eventually Hari suggested going outside, just for a change of scenery. I tried that and was finally able to get Ryan to focus on something else, and he stopped crying. For a while.
I just can't believe this is normal.
Is it just me??
