Teen Slang - 2024

Teen slang is at best a moving target, and I'm certain designed to ensure that they can secretly communicate with one another in a room full of  adults.  Although, occasionally, there are terms that you can figure out (or have clearly been borrowed from past generations!).

So here's some of the top slang I've heard the boys using in 2024:

  • Ate — used to describe when someone does something amazingly well, or succeeds
  • Basic — vanilla or boring, unoriginal, garden variety
  • Bet — a form of "yes," or a confirmation
  • Cap — a lie, e.g. "no cap," meaning to live
  • Drip — swagger, especially of the fashionable sort
  • Dub or Dubs — as in "W" meaning a win
  • Extra — over the top, extreme
  • Fam — a group of friends
  • Fanum tax — stealing food from a friend, named after the food streamer Fanum
  • Fire —  hot, trendy, amazing
  • Fit — short for "outfit"
  • Flex — to show off
  • Hits — a vert, when something "hits" it lands well with or affects someone
  • GYAT or GYATT — Shortened term for "godd**n" used to express approval or excitement (sometimes used to compliment one's butt)
  • Karen  — a disparaging term used to refer to an entitled mom
  • Lit/Turnt/Turnt Up — Something that’s active or popular
  • Low key — 1. Somewhat interested in 2. Keeping information secret
  • Mid — Insult meaning "low quality" or "average." Derives from "mid-tier"— not awful, but not great. Example: "The new Jurassic Park was mid."
  • Ohio — Used to describe someone or something that’s weird, bad, or cringe. You’ll also see it alongside “skibidi” and “rizz”.
  • OK, Boomer — Calling out an idea that is outdated or resistant to change
  • On God — stems from the expression "I swear on God", used to signify that you're being honest, to express when you're shocked or surprised, or to show strong agreement with a statement
  • Rizz — Derived from “charisma." Someone who has “game” when it comes to romantic pursuits. Example"Taylor has that rizz, they're so charming."
  • Salty — bitter, angry, agitated
  • Sic —  used to show something is impressive or exciting
  • Sigma — Someone who is a lone-wolf type, independent but still strong. As opposed to the more dominant "Alpha" male type. (frequently used sarcastically toward an adult)
  • Skibidi  An adjective that can have multiple meanings such as “cool,” “dumb,” or “bad." It comes from meme culture and originates from “Skibidi Toilet,” a popular YouTube video. It's not unlike the nonsense video from the early '00s "Peanut Butter Jelly Time."
  • Skibidi toilet —A surreal animated video featuring a singing toilet. It's not supposed to make sense or any sense, it's just a funny video popular with Gen Alpha.
  • Slaps— Used to express that something is awesome. Ex.: "This burrito slaps."
  • Snapstreak — Created when friends send snaps every day, creating a streak
  • Tool — someone who is stupid, obnoxious, and/or embarrasses themselves, often a jock type
  • Trash — Terrible or unacceptable
  • YAAS — A very emphatic yes
  • YEET — 1. A very strong word for yes. 2. To throw something.
