You Can't Win

What's it like to be a parent?  Glad you asked.  Here's a perfect example:

-- DAY 1 --

Kids: Can we ride our bikes to [destination X}.

Me. No, not today.  It is going to rain, and there was an attempted kidnapping in the area yesterday.

Kids: You are SO MEAN.  You never let us do anything.  I hate this.  You're so unfair.

-- TWO DAYS LATER --

Me: Hey, your dad and I arranged for you to do something SUPER FUN that you love.  You just need to ride your bike there.

Kids: What's wrong with you? You're so lazy. Why can't you just drive us? This sucks, I don't even want to go.

-- BONUS ROUND --

Kids complain, fight, and eventually begrudgingly leave to ride their bikes to the SUPER FUN activity.  Insert lots of recriminations about bad parenting.  Hours later you pick them up and they talk about what an amazing, fun, fantastic, great, awesome time they had.  How much they loved riding their bikes there, and they want to do it again tomorrow.
