All hail the thumb!

On the 4th of July my son found his thumb for the first time. He was lying in my lap, fussing a bit, and then... I looked down... and his thumb was in his mouth and he was quiet and happy. HOORAY!!! Since then he's become more proficient, and now regularly pops that little puppy into his mouth. Amazingly it seems to fix a whole host of problems. Lonely? Try the thumb. Hungry? Suck a thumb until something better comes along. Bored? Search around until you can find Mr. Thumb.

Thus far he's not too particular either. While he usually sucks the thumb on his right hand the left hand is an acceptable substitute. And if he's feeling saucy he's tried sucking on his middle two fingers from time to time. All are equally effective - at least for now - and I'm grateful that I don't have to worry about pacifiers that can get lost/dirty leaving him without any possibility for comfort.

All hail the thumb - bringer of peace and tranquility for babies and parents alike!
